the Warrior Way

The Way of the Warrior

The Bushido code, also known as the "Way of the Warrior," was a set of ethical principles followed by the samurai in feudal Japan.
To simplify it, and activate it, we can summarize the main principles as follows, and then apply them as a
self care directive for ourselves in our battle with SAD

Rectitude (Gi): Be honest, fair, and act with integrity in all situations.
Courage (Yūki): Face challenges and adversity with bravery and determination.
Benevolence (Jin): Show compassion and kindness towards others, especially the weak.
Respect (Rei): Treat others with courtesy, respect, and politeness.
Honesty (Makoto): Always be truthful and sincere in your actions and words.
Honor (Meiyo): Uphold a strong sense of moral and ethical character.
Loyalty (Chūgi): Be faithful and devoted to your lord, family, and friends.
Self-Control (Jisei): Maintain discipline and control over your emotions and actions.

And just how does this translate to modern day mental preparedness?
Easy to say, tougher to execute, and exactly why a samurai mindset is your starting point.

Self-discipline: Both the Bushido code and coping with SAD require self-discipline. In the case of SAD, individuals will need to practice self-discipline to activate routine, habits and behaviour that can help improve their mood, such as getting regular exercise, spending time outdoors, keeping a proper diet or seeking social support.
Resilience and inner strength: The code of the samurai emphasizes cultivating inner strength and resilience to face challenges and adversity. Similarly, individuals dealing with SAD may need to develop resilience and inner strength to cope with the symptoms and find ways to improve their well-being during difficult times.

Mindfulness and self-awareness: Understanding one's emotions and thoughts is essential in both contexts. The Bushido code encourages self-awareness to maintain honour and integrity, while people with SAD may benefit from practicing mindfulness to better manage their emotions and mental health.

Seeking guidance and support: Samurai warriors sought guidance and training from experienced masters to improve their skills and adherence to the code. Similarly, individuals with SAD need guided support, tools and training from family, friends, support groups and/or medical professionals.
